Responsibility

Celestial Seasonings is great.

By not including tags with their tea bags, they (claim to) have saved 3.5 million pounds (1.6 m kilos) of waste from entering landfills every year. That’s amazing!

That sort of environmental responsibility is worthy of being imitated by others. What examples have you seen of actions with seemingly small effect – but that end up having a large effect?

  1. I’m not sure that it was done in order to make a positive environmental impact, but Gold Crown Beverages produces a round tea bag that has no tag. When we use tea bags (only when traveling), we use the Kericho Gold round.

  2. I can’t think of many examples, but one really lousy negative example is toothpaste pumps, which were popular for a while. Much bulkier and more wasteful than tubes! I was glad to see them go away.

Water bottles are another stupid invention.

  3. Bob – I’ve seen those round bags before. I think they are supposed to make the tea infuse better.

Tim – completely agreed. Water bottles – or worse yet – bottled water – are very wasteful. And I’m really glad those pump toothpaste things mostly died out.
